Manchester TV & Film From the early days of John E Blakeley's Mancunian Films through to modern day Granada TV and independent film makers such as Red Productions, Manchester has always been a hotbed for award-winning film production and Oscar winning actors and directors. What makes the city so special is hard to explain but we've had more than our fair share of top TV shows, movies, actors and directors - from Ben Kingsley to Christopher Eccleston, Mike Leigh to Danny Boyle, Coronation Street to Cold Feet, Cracker to Prime Suspect, Queer As Folk to Phoenix Nights, Hobson's Choice to East Is East, 24 Hour Party People to Alfie. They're all from here on these pages we celebrate the city once nicknamed Jollywood!

Movies made in Manchester
Manchester has seen some of the greatest movies to come out of the city. In 1933 John E Blakeley, a music hall enthusiast, took the plunge into production and encouraged its stars to come in front of the cameras. He produced George Formby's first two features, Boots, Boots (d. Bert Tracey, 1934) and Off the Dole (d. Arthur Mertz, 1935), and though Formby was lost to Ealing Studios, a string of other stars emerged and since then many other movies have come out of Manchester to be highly successful.

Not only has Manchester been the location and back drop for numerous movies through the years but it has also produced some of the finest directing talent, from John E Blakeley to one of Britain's most celebrated breakthrough talents of the 1990s, director and producer Danny Boyle made his name with his acclaimed 1996 adaptation of Irvine Welsh's Trainspotting. An angry, scabrously funny film about a group of Edinburgh. Here you'll find the work of our talented Manchester directors.

There are more actors than you would imagine that come from Manchester and since the mid 30's the city has created the finest talent to be seen on the small screen and the big screen. There's usually a real bond between the city and the talent who were born there as many actors have retained their roots in the city and not been lured to the glitz and glamour of London or even Hollywood.
